Interior space

It’s one of the things you have to be keen on when deciding which tent to go for. And with these tents featuring different floor areas, deciding the one that can best suit your needs shouldn’t be a problem.

The same goes for storage of your gear as well, which is where internal pockets, vestibules, and gear lofts come in, some even have sufficient screen room area, which could also be very helpful.

Ease of set up

Setting up a tent isn’t always easy, but this doesn’t have to be a pain in the neck. Sure enough, there are some tents on this list, and out there, that don’t take ages to set up.

Some are so easy to set up you can have it ready in only a matter of minutes. With color-coded design and pre-attached sleeves, set up becomes a breeze; all it takes is to know what to look out for.

Portability

Before you can even think of pitching your tent and enjoying the comfort it has to offer, you have to bring it along in the first place.

That’s where portability comes in, and just because you want to enjoy the convenience and comfort of a tent isn’t to say you have to struggle to get haul it along.

Check for such features as the weight, how small it packs, as well as whether it comes with a carry bag. These are all important if you are visiting a national park or campground where you may have to carry your gear in.

Material

No one wants to spend money on a tent, or any piece of gear for that matter, that can only last a single season. And while the construction could mean all the difference, the material a tent is made of also matters, a lot.

This not only gives you a hint of how long the tent is likely to last, but a high-quality material could also mean better performance and extra comfort.

ALPS Mountaineering Taurus 4-Person Tent

First Impression: Here is a tent from one of the most popular brands out there, ALPS Mountaineering, we’ve come to recognize and love their gear, but does this one make the cut?

PROS.

  • Entry and exit should be easy thanks to two zippered doors
  • It comes with aluminum stakes and guy ropes
  • The windows are also zippered for easy control of airflow
  • Super easy and fast set up with no assembly needed
  • At 10 lb 8oz, it isn’t a heavy tent considering its size and quality

CONS.

  • The film on its windows looks and feels a bit flimsy
  • Also, the mesh on the inner tent beneath the windows cannot be closed, so someone can see the inside from the outside

One of the things

That caught our attention in this tent is its easy setup. With no assembly needed, you can bypass that frustration and have your tent up in next to no time.

And it’s all thanks to the freestanding design, along with its fiberglass two-pole make that cuts the set up time exponentially.

We also loved

How well ventilated it is, with the mesh roof allowing sufficient airflow in and out of the tent, as an added benefit it has a window on each of its doors as well.

And these two entryways not only add to the amount of ventilation you get throughout this tent but of course, the easy exit and entry are a great feature.

Storage space

Shouldn’t be a cause for concern, as ALPS got that covered with the several storage pockets (mesh ones) that this tent comes with.

As well as two vestibules that add to the storage space for your gear. What’s more, it also features a gear loft; it’s got all the space you need to organize your gear.

High rated design

If you are a diehard lover of the outdoors, then the 3-season design of this tent makes it a great choice as you can count on it for most of your trips.

Ventilation

Tops the list when it comes to features that can offer you comfort as far as tents go, and this Kelty tent has a full mesh tent body for maximum ventilation, which also helps prevent that frustrating condensation.

The easy setup

It is also worth mentioning, as it saves you a lot of valuable time, all thanks to its quick-corner poles sleeves as well as color-coded rainfly, it’s one of the fastest tents to set up.

Such features as the full-coverage waterproof rainfly, and 68D polyester tent and floor material are also great when it comes to offering the value you pay for.

CONS.

  • At 13 lbs, it is quite a heavy tent

Well, let’s start with the simple setup,

Much of which you can attribute to the single-wall design of this tent, and the heavy-duty 12mm poles.

However, keep in mind that while the wall is waterproof, its single-wall design means condensation may collect on the inside at night.

Speaking of waterproof,

The material of this tent proves to be great at that, especially with the water-resistant 68D polyester fly, which features a 1200mm PU coating.

Then there’s the 150D polyester canopy, with a 1500mm PU coating finish, not forgetting the 75D floor, which also has a robust 1500mm PU water-resistant coating finish.

  • It comes with a tough rainfly that ensures you’re safe from the elements
  • Sufficient storage spaces and roomy interior
  • The set up is a snap, only taking next to no time and very little (if any) effort
  • Its heavy-duty nylon Oxford floor is also great for keeping you dry
  • Straight wall design offers even more room inside
  • It also has large, heavy-duty zippers on the doors and windows

CONS.

  • At 19.4 lbs, it is a heavy tent

Fast and easy setup

It is by far the one thing that’ll blow you away, and it’s all thanks to this tent’s freestanding design and its two-pole construction. Also, it has pole clips that easily snap over the tent poles, cutting the set up time significantly.

A full-coverage fly

Comes in to keep you safe from the rain, and since it’s made of a tough 75D polyester, you can bet it will keep you dry.

Once inside, you’ll love just how roomy this tent can get, measuring up to 8 feet by 9 feet, which should be more than enough space for four. Even better, the center height is just right for tall guys, as it stands at up to 6 feet.

Also,

You won’t help to notice the great ventilation that you can get with this tent, thanks to its mesh roof vents, as well as its zippered mesh windows, and two doors, all of which ensure more than enough airflow.

  • Convenient, zippered double doors for convenience and privacy
  • It’s also considerably lightweight at 8.49 pounds

CONS.

  • The tent can be a bit hot with the rainfly eclosed during the summer season

One of the features

That set this tent apart is the strategic clip placement, which offers extra interior space. But that’s not all; it also has a zone pre-bend design that leads to vertical walls, and even more room inside.

  • It’s a robust tent despite the lightweight construction

CONS.

  • The interior height is low to the ground, at only 44 inches
  • Its zippers don’t feel solidly built
  • 7 pounds is a weight in a backpack

At first glance,

We loved the lightweight of this one, as it weighs only 7 lbs, which is certainly lightweight for a tent this big, but I think its a little too big to be a great backpacking tent.

But then again it’s the tent’s ability to pack really small that will blow you away, as it collapses to a mere 21 inches by 7 inches, small enough to fit just about anywhere.

Once you get to your destination, there’s the need to set up your tent, and the easier it is the better. Thankfully, this one is built with that need in mind, so it comes with virtually everything you need for the setup.

It has the stakes and the guy lines, hub-and-pole system, as well as a rainfly. However, if you want the footprint, you’ll have to pick that up separately.

Questions and Answers

Question: How do I know if my tent is waterproof enough?

Answer: It’s crucial that your tent is waterproof, since spending the night inside a soaking tent is the last thing any camper wants.

However, it’s easy to find out just how waterproof any tent is; keep an eye on the floor material as well as whether it has a reliable rainfly.

One suggestion I often make to people is to purchase a spray-on sealer and spray all joints and seams of any tent to assist further in keeping any rain out.

Question: My tent has a strong stench, how can I get rid of it?

Answer: A strong chemical smell is one of the most irritating issues you might have to deal with when you get a new tent or other gear made with plastics and nylon.

But thankfully enough, there’s an easy way around this one, you just need to make sure you get your tent early enough so you can set it outside and give it time to air out.

Question: Are two doors better than one?

Answer: It depends on the size of the tent. It would be meaningless to have a two-person tent with two doors, but an eight-person tent with a single door could be a bit inconvenient.

A 4-person tent would be just fine with a single door, but if privacy is a priority for you, or just to reduce the chances of annoying your friends when you need to get out through the night then two doors would be much better.

Question: Are 4-person tents ideal for all outdoor activities?

Answer: Thanks to their sleek and lightweight design, these tents make a great option for just about any outdoor adventure.

However, keep in mind that some, if not most of these tents are 3-season tents, so don’t count on them if you’re heading to a place with extremely low temperatures during the winter season.

Extreme alpine adventures call for a good quality 4-season tent so if low temperatures or snow await at your destination be sure to research good tents like those in my post, Best 4 Season Tents
