First Impressions: A very smart jacket from a well-known company, Columbia. Does this jacket offer the value you expect?

The first feature you’ll most likely notice right off the bat is the 100-percent down insulation on this jacket. Made with an RDS certified 650 down fill, it is designed to give you great warmth in moderate winter weather.

A very clever design, it also has a baffling, which makes it very flexible at all crucial points, as well as offering you extra loft and a versatile fit.

Its 600-fill power down isn’t as high as some we will look at, but it still packs in the punch to make you sweat on a very cold morning.

Besides, this jacket also has a Down Defender water-resistant construction, which also ensures you stay dry as well. It also has a hem that offers a great fit, thus helping keep the cold air out.

Eddie Bauer Men’s CirrusLite Down Jacket

PROS.

  • A StormRepel finish ensures moisture doesn’t soak into the down
  • It’s a super lightweight jacket with an impressive performance
  • As a true to size jacket, it ensures just the right fit
  • Higher neck, hem, and cuffs offer enhanced protection
  • Enough pockets for your handy items
  • Long enough with an average length of 27.5 inches

CONS.

  • It is a popular and budget jacket

First Impressions: If you want to get a jacket that offers a combination of lightweight, versatility, and performance all in one package, then this might just be the one for you.

To start with the performance, its 650-fill Premium Down goes the distance to offer you more than enough warmth, when venturing out in low temperatures.

But that’s not all; it also has elastic-bound cuffs, as well as a waist hem, which further help keep out the cold air, thus ensuring extra warmth.

I found the construction of some seams was poor and some down was escaping from a seam around the shoulder after minimal use.

But better

There’s a higher neck collar, which offers that extra bit of protection from the cold around the neck area, not forgetting that it also fits true to size, so it fits great.

It also has two secure-zip hand pockets and outer pockets on the side for keeping your gear and offering extra insulation for your hands, as well as an interior pocket where you can keep some essentials.

Besides the warmth

You can’t go wrong with the nylon shell of this jacket, which, along with a StormRepel DWR water-resistant construction, will help to keep you nicely warm and dry even during wet weather.

  • Strong 850-fill down for maximum warmth and comfort
  • Reliable full zip closure design for keeping the cold air out
  • Adjustable cuffs and a straight hemline offer additional protection

CONS.

  • The elastic fabric at the hem seems a bit fragile, it would be great with a strong pull cinch

First Impressions: With 850 fill down wrapped in a classy lightweight shell is a real contender.

This one from Filson has its share of great features, so if you are shopping for a jacket with a difference, it could as well make the cut.

With a water-repellent fabric around the crucial parts such as shoulders, pockets, and the hood, it keeps you dry and warm, although it would be better with this fabric all over the jacket.

The zippers are just as awesome since you have a full-zip closure that guarantees ultimate protection from the cold. And it’s super easy to use; all thanks to the dual zipper pull design.

Its ultralight shell

It is built to give you a combination of both performance and lightweight. And there’s more, even better stuff inside, as this jacket features an impressive 850-fill-power lining with traceable goose-down insulation.

A stand collar and an attached hood add to the warmth that you can get with this jacket, and Filson takes it even further with the split kangaroo hand pockets.

Then there’s a straight hemline and adjustable cuffs, both of which help prevent the cold air from making its way inside your jacket.

Tommy Hilfiger Packable Down Jacket

PROS.

  • Flexible zipper closure for different types of weather
  • Small, unobtrusive logo
  • Very lightweight and easily packable, thus it’s easy to store and transport
  • Easy to clean since it is machine washable
  • Comes with a drawstring bag that matches your jacket for storage
  • Two internal pockets for keeping your items safe

CONS.

  • On the downside, there seem to be some alleged problems with seams failing and releasing down

First Impressions: Tommy Hilfiger is a renowned household and outdoors brand, and this jacket ticks a lot of boxes.

To enable this jacket to lock in as much warmth as possible, Tommy Hilfiger has equipped it with a 100% down feather for the padding, however, it is difficult to find a down rating.

But

It has a quilted pattern, which brings onboard that stylish touch and enhances the functionality of your jacket. Then the 100% nylon outer shell adds to the efficiency of this jacket with a lightweight design that would be hard to pass up.

Additionally

It has a standup collar, which gives this jacket extra protection for your neck area, and it drives home that outstanding mature look.

Then there’s the zipper closure, which is great for locking out the cold air and keeping the warm air in while offering the flexibility you need when the weather changes.

While most other jackets have a very large logo, Tommy has incorporated theirs in a very unobtrusive way on the left chest.

But what caught our eye on this one is just how packable it is, thanks to its lightweight accent, which makes storing and transporting it super easy.

Mammut Whitehorn Jacket

PROS.

  • Enough pockets for your items
  • An outstanding retro-style reversible construction
  • Robust 650-fill down for maximum warmth
  • Features reinforced Ajungilak filling on the shoulders for thermal regulation
  • The DWR coating keeps you dry in wet conditions

CONS.

  • Very few faults with the Mammut

First Impressions: We’ve all known and loved Mammut for their variety of great outdoor gear.

One of the things that caught our attention is the high down puff strength, which comes from its 650-fill down, which offers a combination of warmth and comfort in cold conditions?

The outer shell stands out with its Pertex Quantum material design, which features 100% polyester and DWR coating panels for protection from wet conditions. What’s more, these panels consist of 94% nylon and 6% elastane, this one is a great jacket.

Pockets are essential in jackets

As these allow you to carry along a few handy, small items that you might need along the way such as a phone, compass, map, and others. Also, you can put your hands in pockets for a little warmth if conditions become extreme.

Thankfully

This jacket has several pockets, with 2 external zipper pockets on the side, and 2 internal ones, as well as a zippered chest pocket.

A retro-style reversible design gives this jacket two different looks, which doesn’t add much to the performance but is great if the style is of the essence for you.

And while still at it

Keep in mind that this is a lightweight jacket at only 623 g, which is great considering the amount of warmth it offers. I like this one a lot.

This Marmut Whitehorn jacket is a good all-round jacket for everyday use during mild to cold weather, and one thing I like is that it consists of recycled down and recycled Pertex Quantum for a sustainable enjoyment of nature.

  • Enough pockets for your small items that you need on the go
  • Strong down helps keep you cozy warm even in extreme temperatures
  • Zipper closure allows you to regulate the temperature inside as needed
  • The adjustable hood has up to 3 panels for ultimate protection

CONS.

  • This jacket is not easily compressible for storage

First Impressions: A jacket with just enough features to give you protection from the outdoor cold.

Columbia Men’s Frost Fighter Jacket

PROS.

  • Easy to clean since it’s machine washable
  • Omni-Shield design helps prevent water and stains
  • Convenient zipper closure that is every bit easy to use
  • Enough pockets for your items
  • It is very compressible, packs small

CONS.

  • The stitching on the seams isn’t as great as it should be, stretch it a little and the lint comes out

First Impressions: The first feature that we noticed in this one is the material; it looks great and fits like a glove.

It also goes the distance to protect you from the cold, but the ripstop nylon, in particular, helps keep out the water and is also very durable.

And there’s more

This jacket also has an Omni-Shield design that is repellent to both water and stain, but what makes it outstanding is the down-style baffling.

It is a very stylish jacket and versatile enough for just about any outdoor adventure and it has two zippered hand pockets.

Its zipper closure adds to the convenience you get with this jacket, as it not only helps keep the cold out, but it’s also great for a bit of flexibility when the weather changes.

Another great feature

In this one is the abrasion-resistant chin guard, which offers extra protection from the cold, and is sure to last just as long as the jacket itself.

Questions and Answers

Question: How to pick the right size?

Answer: Down jackets come in all shapes, styles, and colors, but when it comes to size, you have to get a nice fit as there are different sizes to choose from.

That’s the good thing but so you can always find a perfect fit, just make sure to check the tag, and read a few reviews to find out whether it’s true to size or runs small/large.

Question: I’m still feeling a bit cold even with my jacket on.

Answer: It’s important to keep in mind that these jackets will perform differently for different people and in different conditions.

However, if you just can’t feel warm enough, you can try adding some layers beneath your jacket for extra warmth.

Question: How about the rain?

Answer: Quite often, the cold weather turns out to be wet, which is why it’s essential to ensure you get a jacket that can keep you both warm and dry although most down jackets are far from waterproof

As we’ve mentioned above, if you have any layers to add for extra warmth, the jacket should almost always be on top, and thankfully, most of these jackets do a great job at that.

Question: Should I get a jacket with a hood?

Answer:  Sure thing! While this is not a must, a jacket with a hood goes a long way to offering you overall protection from the cold.

Even better, some of the jackets, including some that we’ve featured in this post, have a detachable hood, so you can remove it when it’s not necessary.

Buyers Guide How to Choose The Best Down Jacket For Men

The material should be your first stop

The first thing you need to be very keen on when choosing the right down jacket is checking what materials it’s made of. Get this wrong, and you could end up very frustrated.

However, these jackets do a great job thanks to the down material or other fill, but also make sure to check the outer shell and the lining, good durable material will give you more value.

Down

Down material is rated anywhere from 600 upwards, the higher the number the warmer the jacket, however, most of us would not need anything higher than a 700, and for everyday use in most climates 600-800  would be quite enough with a warm underlayer.

800 and anything above would be the sort of jacket you would be wanting for any serious alpine adventure plus they can come with a very high price tag.

If your out hunting, fishing, or just sitting around at camp, being suitably dressed in a down jacket over the top you will be toasty and happy.

Construction

As much as a jacket might have the right materials, if it’s not well constructed, it could easily turn out to be a piece of crap. Like all products, some are always going to be better than others while some are just complete duds.

Keep an eye on how well the seams are designed, and whether or not the jacket has any issues with the release of any cotton or feathers coming out through the outer shell.

Pockets

When it gets a tad too cold, we all tend to tuck our hands in the pockets for extra warmth, so a couple of good deep pockets to keep the hands warm is always a good feature of any jacket.

That shouldn’t be the only reason to look for a jacket with pockets though; you also need to have an easy way of carrying your items such as a map, compass, and such.

The good news is, most jackets have pockets, some with zippers, and some even have inner pockets for more valuable items.

Some only have side pockets, so it depends on your needs, I personally like to have a few pockets I can carry stuff in as I don’t like carrying small items in my hands.

The zippers

If there’s one thing you don’t want to get wrong on any jacket, it has to be the zippers, if the one you are going for features a zipper closure, make sure to read enough reviews to be sure whether the zipper can last as long as the jacket itself.

If it’s a crappy zipper that could break or jam any time you won’t enjoy the jacket, however, I have seen some expensive zippers fail the same as a cheapie so sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw.

Final Thoughts

Stepping out in the cold can be both uncomfortable and risky for your health. So, it’s essential that you get a jacket that has what it takes to keep you toasty warm.

Luckily enough, with all the options out there, this doesn’t have to be a hard task. And we’ve made it even easier with a collection of some of the top options on the market.

Now if you’re stepping out in the cold, wear quality winter boots, and the best down jacket you can buy and you will be set for any challengers the cold weather might throw at you.

If you have any more questions about the best down jacket for men, Id love to hear them and I’ll be more than happy to answer them in the comments section below.

Remember! Leave it cleaner than you found it, only footprints not rubbish.

Shane.
