Big Agnes Fly Creek Backpacking Tent

Key Features

Lightweight and Compact

With a compelling packed weight of 2lb 5oz, Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 is truly one of the first pieces of gear backpackers consider to cut down weight. It utilizes super-lightweight materials that don’t compromise quality.

The tent makes use of thinner materials and a unique pole structure allows a compact size of 4×19 inches when stored in its stuff sack. You won’t have any issues finding room for the Fly Creek UL2 in your backpack.

If you want to shred out the weight in your pack but still prefer a double-walled tent, then Fly Creek UL2 is the best choice for you with a trail weight of 1lb 15oz

Easy to Setup and Take Down

Setting up this tent is simple and fast. What makes it shine the most is its DAC angle SF hub that’s unique to this tent.

With a single hubbed pole, you don’t have to worry about assembling multiple pieces. Its Y-shape structure makes an intuitive construction.

You got two points at the front and a single point at the back to attach. The pole is color-coded to eliminate guesswork.

You get to have a semi-freestanding tent, however, it is best to keep in mind to stake out all the corners by the feet to maximize interior space.

After that, simply insert the poles into grommets, lift the clips to attach the body. Now, you’re ready to set up the rain fly.

Attaching the rain fly to the body is also easy. You will find simple buckles at each attachment point which are color-coded too for easy orientation.

The Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 is one of the easiest setups we’ve come across, mainly because of its minimalist approach and simple design.

Livability and Interior Space

Although we think the UL2 is undeniably best for a solo used, you still do get a decent livable space for two. The biggest compromise to having an ultralight tent is the interior space.

Employing the single hub pole creates a near-vertical wall at the front of the tent. It enhances the space on the sides bringing the tent body out a lot more.

Going to the dimension of the tent, it is 52 inches wide at the head and 42 inches wide at the foot. So, it does taper off towards the end to save weight and pack space.

It is 86 inches long with a peak height of about 40 inches. The total floor area is 28 sq ft making it large and roomy enough even for a taller backpacker.

There’s plenty of space that you can still sit up and stretch your feet inside the tent. Changing, moving around, organizing your gears, and doing what you need to do inside the tent is convenient.

Rain Fly and Weather Protection

As we’ve mentioned, Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 is an excellent three-season 2 person backpacking tent. With the addition of the full coverage rainfly, gives you some serious protection against windy nights.

The rain fly is a silicone treated nylon rip-stop making it completely waterproof. Boosting its waterproof performance are the taped seams coated with 1200mm polyurethane coating.

It also has a bathtub style floor that is silicone treated nylon rip-stop and is fully waterproof too. The floor is raised towards the head end and the single door increases protection against winds and heavy rainfall.

To further maximize the waterproofness of the tent, make sure the two corner loops at the back are attached to the tent stakes. This will draw out the rain fly more offering you absolutely full coverage.

The super lightweight polyester mesh on almost the entire body of the tent allows enough air circulation and ventilation. With the generous amount of air flowing inside makes the tent not overly prone to moisture buildup.

Whenever the night weather is nice, you can stow the silicon treated rainfly and have a chance for some good stargazing opportunities.

Also, to provide you with a little privacy down low, a nylon rip-stop privacy panel that is slightly water-resistant is placed almost half-way of the tent.

Vestibule and Door

The vestibule of Fly Creek UL2 adds about 8-square feet of exterior space. Truly, this added space is plenty for two backpackers.

You can easily store in there your packs, muddy boots, and all other essential gears. It certainly provides ample space which is helpful especially when the weather is bad outside.

You’ve got two big interior pockets on both sides of the tent. You can make use of these pockets for other small valuable stuff that you want to easily access.

At the center top of the tent, you will find another pocket for headlamps to keep you illuminated at night time. This way, you won’t have any problem if you need to read a book or do something inside the tent.

The huge D-shape door at the head area of the tent makes it a lot easier to go in and out. Well, for two persons it means you don’t have to climb on the other person as if the door was placed on the side of the tent.

Questions and Answers

Q: What’s the difference between the original Fly Creek UL and Fly Creek UL2?

A: The Fly Creek UL2 is the enhanced version of the Fly Creek UL. Although they look similar in style, UL2’s three-pole design has been modified to sit more upright to increase interior space without adding weight.

Unlike with the first Fly Creek model which can be cramped even for a single person, UL2 is now entirely livable.

Q: I am 6’3” in height, will I fit in this tent?

A: The Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 is 86 inches long so yes you will definitely fit inside the tent. You can sit up and lay down without feeling crowded.

Tips You Can Take Away

  1. To really draw the tent body out and provide more interior space, attach the two loops found at the external side of the tent body to the integrated clips on the rain fly. Include them as you guy out the rainfly for this will pull the loop and extend the tent body further.
  2. If you’re going to use the tent for two, make sure you bring regular size sleeping bags so it will fit well and not overlap each other inside the tent.
  3. What we always say, it is better to include a footprint beneath to increase the longevity of the tent.

The Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 is without a doubt a smart ultralightweight tent. Though some may claim it to be a little crowded for two, we still think it’s acceptable as long as you still have a conducive space to move inside.

That said, this tent is truly an oversize tent for a solo backpacker. Big Agnes has really taken into consideration the whole design of this tent to provide us good sheltered space without adding to the weight of the tent.

This tent has proven to be strong in tough weather conditions, pleasantly easy on the back, and gives you ample space to comfortably move inside.

If you’re considering to upgrade and looking for a reliable ultralight tent, then we highly recommend this shelter for you.
