Cooking is one of the activities the whole family can interact with, and something that makes camping more memorable. The food seems to taste better when you’re cooking over an open fire or grill. i have put together a small selection of simple camp cooking recipes for you to try.

Unfortunately, many of the home recipes cannot be well cooked at a campground. For most campers, one of the glaring problems is the possibility of cooking without a complete kitchen setup like oven, microwave and electronic appliances.

However, all the luxuries of home are not essential when cooking over an open fire, it is not too difficult and certainly worth having a go, so roll up the sleeves and at try out one or two of these easy camp recipes. So if you’re ready to go on your next camping trip and have a desire to cook outside with your loved ones, you’ll have an incredible time with them. These are easy to prepare and you really will enjoy the experience.

1. Pizza Mountain Pie Recipe.

 

This is one of the most loved camp cooking recipes and it takes about 10 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon butter (softened), 2 slices of white bread, 1 tablespoon pizza sauce, 4 tablespoons shredded good mozzarella cheese (divided), 4 slices pepperoni and 1 tablespoon chopped green pepper (optional).

Directions:

Spread butter over the bread slices. Place one slice in a sandwich iron, buttered side down. Spread with pizza sauce and then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons cheese and pepperoni. You may also add green pepper if you wish. Top it with the remaining cheese and bread slice, buttered side up. Then close the iron.

Cook over a hot camp fire and turn occasionally until it turns golden brown and the cheese is melted. The cooking should last between 3-6 minutes.

2. Sheepherder’s Breakfast Recipe.

Wondering what recipe works best for breakfast? Sheepherder’s breakfast recipe is a sure hit any time! What’s more? It’s easy to prepare and can be served with toast, juice and milk or even coffee. This delicious recipe takes 30 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients:

350g bacon strips (finely chopped), 1 medium onion (chopped), 1 package or 850g of frozen hash brown potatoes (thawed), 8 large eggs, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper and 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions:

Cook the bacon and chopped onions in a large skillet over medium heat until bacon is crisp. Drain and reserve ¼ cup dripping in pan. Then place in hash browns and cook over medium heat without covering it for 10 minutes or until the bottom is golden brown. Then turn the potatoes With the back of a spoon, make eight evenly spaced openings in the potato mixture. Break one egg into each opening and then sprinkle salt and pepper.

Then cook it covered on low heat for 10 minutes or until the eggs are set and the potatoes are tender. Now sprinkle each opening with cheese and let it stand until the cheese is melted and you’re good to go!

3. Campfire Hash Recipe.

This recipe is an excellent camp cooking idea after a full day of outdoor activities. The meal is tasty and can be prepared with ingredients that are widely loved.

Ingredients:

1 large onion (chopped), 2 tablespoons canola oil, 2 garlic cloves (minced), 4 large potatoes (peeled and cubed), 450g pork polish salami (halved and sliced), 1 can (120g) of chopped green chillies and 1 can (440g) of whole kernel corn (drained).

Directions:

Heat, cook and stir onion in oil until tender using a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute longer. Add potatoes and cook for 20 minutes uncovered while stirring occasionally.

Add salami and then cook and stir until meat and potatoes are tender and browned which should take about 10-15 minutes. Stir in chillies and corn and then heat through after which your meal is ready to be served.

4, Cake and Berry Campfire Cobbler Recipe.

This is another great cooking camping recipe if you’ve had a busy day at fishing or hiking or other outdoor activities. Like the others, it is easy to make and takes about 40 minutes in total to prepare.

Ingredients:

2 cans (880g) raspberry pie filling, 1 package yellow cake mix (regular size), 1-1/4 cups of water, ½ cup canola oil, Vanilla Custard or Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Directions:

Prepare your grill or campfire for low heat using 16-20 charcoal briquettes or large wood chips.

Line an ovenproof Dutch oven with heavy-duty aluminum foil and add pie filling. In a large bowl, combine with cake mix, water and oil. Then spread over pie filling.

Cover the Dutch oven. When the briquettes or wood chips are covered with white ash, place Dutch oven directly on top of 8-10 of them. Using long-handled tongs, place remaining briquettes on pan cover.

Cook for 30-40 minutes or until filling is bubbly and toothpick inserted in the topping comes out clean. To check for readiness, use the tongs to carefully lift the cover. Serve with custard or ice cream if desired.

5. Campfire Beans and Ham Soup Recipe.

This is a kind of soup your loved ones are sure to rave about. These beans and ham taste incredibly good and will make a good treat during your camping. It takes about 15 minutes to prepare and about 90 minutes to grill.

Ingredients:

440g dried navy beans, 2 small onions, 8 cups water, 2-3 cups cubed fully cooked lean ham (500-600g) 2 smoked ham hocks, 2 cups chopped celery, 1 cup chopped carrots, ½ teaspoon dried basil, ½ teaspoon pepper.

Directions:

Place beans in an ovenproof Dutch oven and add enough water to cover the beans. Allow to boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat; cover and let it stand for 1-4 hours or until beans are softened.

Chop one onion; slice second onion and separate into rings. Set onions aside. Drain and rinse beans to the pan. Add reserved onions and stir in the remaining ingredients. Cover the pan and place on the grill rack over indirect medium heat.

Cover the grill and cook for 1 hour or until beans are almost tender. Uncover the Dutch oven; cover the grill and cook 30 minutes longer or until beans are tender. Ham hocks and your meal is ready to be served.
