Lifestraw Personal Water Filter Reviews – Lifesaving Technology

This article, Lifestraw personal water filter reviews one of the best survival tools on the market, and the perfect item to have in your gear as part of any hiking or camping equipment.

If your a regular outdoor enthusiast, camper, or hiker chances are that you have already heard about the high-quality super compact Lifestraw Personal Water Filter.

Designed and manufactured using the latest technology and sporting a simple but intelligent design, this filter allows users to consume water from any water source, may it be contaminated or not, dams, swamps, and rivers.

What makes this device stand out from the rest is that it has the ability to eliminate more than 99.9 percent of waterborne germs and bacteria from the water.

Lifestraw surpasses EPA guidelines with its ability to eliminate E. Coli, Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia, which are very common in water bodies. With this ability to eliminate germs found in water, the Lifestraw Water Filter is ideal for emergency situations or in times of disaster.

Moreover, Lifestraws have also been sent to various locations worldwide, in regions where it is extremely difficult to find water, or where a natural disaster has struck, and into third world countries where water can be close to undrinkable.

The Key Features

Sturdy Construction.

Lifestraw water filter offers a great solution with its sturdy construction especially when camping or hiking. Designed using lightweight plastic, Lifestraw Water Filter stands at 9 inches and weighs only 57 grams. The lightweight design of this water filter makes it easy to carry along and thereby reducing the need for carrying a water bottle. It should be a part of the things you take camping.

Inlet and Outlet.

Lifestraw features two openings, one on the top and the other one at the bottom. The opening at the top serves as a mouthpiece, while the one on the bottom serves as a water inlet. It is important to note that none of its parts requires replacement, mainly because they do not wear out.

BPA and Chemical Free.

Unlike other water filters of similar size, Lifestraw Water Filter does not make use of any chemical or BPA, when eliminating bacteria and other pathogens from water. Lack of chemicals makes the water BPA free. The technology employed in this device entails water being drawn up through the straw that then passes through the hollow fibers. This device meets US EPA Drinking water standards.

Design.

The hollow fibers then filter the water to 0.2 microns across. Since Lifestraw makes use of physical filtration alone, users do not need to worry about anything expiring in this device. Users will only be required to retain the cleanliness of this device.

Power.

Considering the manufacturers did not include batteries in its overall design, Lifestraw does not require any kind of recharging, and that is a tremendously important feature. It is another reason it is so attractive to emergency service agencies in underdeveloped countries in finding ways of providing safe drinking water to people in need.

Convenience.

Lifestraw has been designed in such a manner that it provides users with safety and convenience when consuming water from contaminated sources. Apart from removing almost all bacteria and germs from drinking water, Lifestraw also reduces muddiness and turbidity in water by removing all suspended particles. It simply makes microbiologically contaminated water safe to drink.

Harmful Bacteria.

Some of the harmful bacteria removed from water by Lifestraw include E. Coli, Campylobacter, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella, Shigella, and Vibrio cholera. Protozoa removed by Lifestraw include Cryptosporidium parvum, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia lamblia. Nonetheless, it is important to note that Lifestraw cannot eliminate chlorine, salt or toxic chemicals from water.

High Flow Rate.

Lifestraw offers an extremely high flow rate in comparison to similar devices from other companies. The main reason why Lifestraw offers a high flow rate is mainly that the hollow fiber membranes in the device, trap the bacteria and the pathogen from water and in the process allowing clean water to run through the device. Moreover, the water that comes through the mouth does not have an aftertaste. Lifestraw does not use chlorine or iodine.

Long Life.

Filters Up to 1,000 gallons. If the flow of water starts to slow or gets hard to suck it is time for a replacement unit. Unlike many water filtration systems, this can be put into your pack and it is not a weight on your shoulders

Maintenance.

To clean the filter users are advised to use the backflushing method. Regularly blow air back through your Lifestraw after drinking to keep the filter clean and protect it from clogging. Before use stand it in clean water with the mouthpiece out for 30 seconds to allow the filter to prime. When you return from a camping trip and after use rinse with safe clean water remove both caps and allow it to dry before storing.

This is an amazing piece of equipment at a very affordable price for something that can literally save lives.

What are the Helpful Benefits of this Product?

Lifestraw comes with an inbuilt lanyard, which in turn makes carrying the device quite simple.

Though this might sound like a minor benefit, the lanyard makes the device portable and allows you to attach it to your person or clothing with a small carabiner.

If it is physically attached to you it is a little harder to drop into a deep running stream and maybe lose it.

Both ends of the device are covered by caps, thereby ensuring that you do not get any foreign debris or dirt on the sipping area.

Moreover, due to the fact that Lifestraw has a protection cover, it is extremely difficult for cross-contamination to take place.

The device has the ability to filter up to 1,000 gallons of water, thereby meaning that this device can be used for such a long time.

Considering the fact that an average human being consumes 1-1.5 gallons of water a day, users will appreciate how long this device is going to last.

Lifestraw is smaller in size thereby making it quite easy to carry with you when going for your camping, hiking, or other outdoor trips.

It has the ability to remove up to 99.9 percent of germs and bacteria in the water. Furthermore, Lifestraw does not contain any chemicals, thereby ensuring that the water coming through the Lifestraw does not have an aftertaste.

There are no moving parts in the filter and it does not need any batteries or other power to function.

  2. Cannot be used in saltwater
  3. Not compatible with a container with a narrow mouth

My Overall Opinion

Lifestraw Water Filter is undeniably one of the most efficient portable water filters in the market today and I think it will stay that way for some time.

It has been proven over several years to be a super-efficient, easy to use, and very economical way of putting water security more within our reach when we are in unknown territory.

Campers and outdoors people are going to fall in love with this device. Camping is only one of many areas where these items could be put to good use.

Safe water is a major issue we need to address and make plans for when visiting another country that may not have such a reliable supply of safe water.

I know that when I travel through some parts of Asia, the local people seem to be unaffected and can stomach the water that is available, but if you are a tourist your health could be jeopardized by drinking the same water, so having a device such as the Lifestraw Filter could literally save your life.

This is one of those products that can really change the world for a lot of people, and how they live, and that is exactly what it has done for many people in developing countries who lack access to clean safe drinking water.

This Product was an easy one to rate as I own it and use it and for this review, I’m going straight to a 10 out of 10 this is simply a wonderful invention that does save lives. Grab yours today and be prepared.

  1. What a great review. It does seem to be a great product for such a price and the cons mentioned are non-essential if taking the affordable price into consideration. But you mentioned that this cannot be used in salt water. Could you suggest affordable personal water filter that can be used in salted water?

    • Hi Arta, thanks for the comment yes the Lifestaw personal water filter is an excellent product and a great addition to your kit. Salt water filters are available, reverse osmosis systems work well. However, they are usually very expensive and cumbersome in most cases, and not really suited to camping or hiking.

      Thanks Shane
