Mountain Trails Base Camp Cot – Make your own Trails

The Mountain Trails Base Camp Cot could well prove to be the perfect camping companion, as comfortable as it might be sleeping inside a tent with a sleeping bag nothing quite compares to the comfort that comes with sleeping on a quality cot off the ground.

Thankfully, you can still find great cots that offer impressive performance in terms of comfort and durability, maybe for you, this is one of them, so let’s dive in and see what this cot has to offer.

The Key Features.

Strong Frame.

First things first, the one thing that you need to check up before putting your money on the line is the frame of a cot. It’s here where you can discern if this folding camp cot you are going for will hold up or it will simply crumble down beneath you. This one has the makings of a good long-lasting sleeping surface.

Thankfully, with a rugged steel frame, the Mountain Trails Cot can support up to 225 lbs with ease. What’s more, the frame is also very durable and with a very simple design, these cots work well which ensures you can count on it for many seasons. Reliability is a real necessity while in the outdoors.

It offers great comfort.

One thing is for sure, this cot doesn’t have to have padding or insulation to bring out the comfort in it. With its bars bending at an angle downwards from the sides, you don’t have to worry about anything pressing up against your back while you sleep.

The polyester canvas is also firm enough, but not too tight to cause any discomfort. This is not to say you can’t add some padding to enhance the comfort, a self-inflating air pad works wonders, the choice is all yours.

The other thing that you’ll love about this cot is that you don’t need any insulation at all. Since it is well off the ground, it requires way less insulation than you would need when sleeping on the ground. These are very good to keep the cold at bay when in a very cold climate and with a pad and bag you will sleep well on most cold nights.

Safe for the tent floor.

This cot comes with one aspect that sets it apart, the four bars it stands on. Unlike most others that come with pointed legs, the bars on this one make it a great option for anyone who is considering this cot for use inside a tent, the rounded bar will not damage the floor of the family tent.

While the pointed cots could easily puncture your tent floor, you can be sure that’s nothing to worry about with this one. But to make it even safer for your tent, you can consider adding something under the feet, especially if you are camping in an area with soft ground.

Ideal size for inside your shelter.

It goes without saying that striking the balance between comfort and size can be an uphill task for many. You need a cot you can sleep on without squeezing, yet it should still fit in the tent without having to force anything.

This is where this cot comes into play, as you can use it with both large and considerably small tents alike. Measuring only 6.7 inches high, it would be a perfect fit even for the low solo tents that a lot of solo campers prefer.

However, it’s best to consider assembling your cot outside if the tent has a large enough door to fit the cot through when unfolded. It’s just easier you have plenty of room and not restricted by the height or walls of the tent to maneuver it around.

Easily portable.

When it comes to portability, this camp bed is one of the best options you can get out there. Despite being capable of supporting up to 225 pounds, it is pretty light itself.

Weighing around 9.8 pounds, it wouldn’t be much of a weight to add to your luggage. And that’s not all; it also comes with an included carry bag that you are going to need when transporting or storing your cot.

It’s sufficiently roomy.

If you are a big person, you might have been worrying about getting a cot that you can sleep comfortably. If that is one of your top considerations, then this cot is fair game.

Measuring an impressive 74.8 inches by 30.3 inches in size, this cot is wide enough for big and tall people alike. Even for those who love sleeping on their backs, there will still be a space for your arms as well.

Easy to set up.

For some, the assembly of this cot seems to be daunting. However, once you get a hang of it, this is one of the easiest cots to assemble. Since it comes with everything you need, you only have to do a few fixes to get it ready for the night.

In most cases, once you know how to unfold it, you can have it set in a matter of minutes. It’s really not that hard, read on to find out how to get this done below.

  1. Wow, if assembling is the only con, then this is an awesome cot, because from the video it looks really easy to assemble to me. I’m not a mechanical engineer either. I would almost bet money a tent is way more difficult to assemble. Only question I really have is this “Is this cot waterproof”? I ask this from a mishap camping trip I had one time.

Got lost in the Smokey Mountains, started raining hard just had to pitch a tent and hope for the best, we were next to a creek, and our blankets (can you tell we weren’t professionals) got soaking wet, we all got wet. It was miserable. So, if this cot is waterproof and easily dried that would be a very added benefit.

    • Hi Sara, I agree with you It’s not really a con and I did not find it a problem personally. I think most of us who have camped out regularly over a long period of time has been caught short with inclement weather events that form quickly and we didn’t quite have the camp completely ready.

As for waterproof, you can hose it till its soaked then just stand it up and give the edges a bump to shake excess water from the cot and a simple wipe with a towel, put it out and the polyester canvas topping will dry in a couple of minutes.

Thanks for your great comment, Shane.

  2. Awesome post, Shane! I’m looking to go on a camping trip with the boys once the weather gets nicer this spring. I’ve been looking at cots, because like you said, sleeping in a tent is fine, but cots are where it’s at! In my opinion they’re the best camping inventions since sliced bread! Well, that and maybe the canteen ; )

But great review, this one cot looks like strong, durable and reliable piece of equipment. I might have to look into getting one for the trip!! Like you said, having a place to sleep when you’re camping is the one thing you can’t afford to skip when you’re planning ha ha. Hope to read more content from you in the near future, Shane!

  3. Hi Shane,

Awesome article, I really enjoyed the reading!

We used to go camping a lot with my kids, but since I couldn’t sleep comfortably on a decent bed, I didn’t want to go camping anymore. This is the only thing that really stopped me. We used to sleep on an inflatable mattress, and in the middle of the night, I found myself sleeping on the floor, the mattress deflated and it hurt my back. Anyway, it was awful. Now that I see the cot, it makes me want to pack and go camping:) I’ll give it a try, I am sure this will allow me to sleep well. I’ll check this further on Amazon. Although, you have provided all the information about this cot, I do have a question. What if it doesn’t suit, is it possible to return it? Is there a warranty?

Thank you for this excellent post!
