Yeti Roadie 20 Cooler Review

With superior ice retention capabilities that are so far above the coolers of old, the Yeti Roadie 20 Cooler is undeniably one of the best portable coolers in the market today.

A tough and durable build using specialized rotomolded polyethylene construction. If you are doing research on the possibility of adding a robust and reliable cooler to your kit then this is just one you really have to check out.

The construction of these roto-molded coolers isn’t that hi-tech, however, when you do buy one, it will possibly remain in your possession for a lifetime.

They are not a flimsy and fragile item that will fall apart quickly, these coolers are built with durability at the forefront of their design, so it is quite possible they may even outlast the owner.

Yeti designed and developed these coolers after years of camping, fishing, and hunting by people who lost good times to handles that broke, and lids that just blew off in the wind.

Many caved in when they were accidentally sat on, trips were often cut short because ice wouldn’t last much more than the first day.

Coolers remained cheap and fragile for years with no real improvement until roto mounded techniques allowed these companies to build a sturdy cooler tough enough to take into the wild and come back in one piece, and still have ice in the days after the adventure was finished.

Key Features

Extra-Thick Walls.

For maximum insulation, the Yeti 20 sports extra-thick walls engineered using trademark Permafrost insulation this makes your ice stay ice.

The pressure-injected, PermaFrost insulation protects the contents stored within the Yeti Roadie, from outside temperatures and gives the cooler its excellent ice retention qualities

Hinge

While it is easy to sometimes overextend a lid of a cooler and cause damage to the hinge system, on this Yeti, the hinge a one continuous aluminum rod holding the lid onto the body of the cooler.

It has been engineered with strength and durability and the cooler has been molded with stops to prevent the hinge from being overextended and possibly damaged.

Safety and Secure.

Thanks to the Rotomolded Construction, the Roadie 20 has been certified by the Grizzly Bear committee, as a bear-resistant container.

For maximum security, There are two locking points so it is a good idea to purchase two padlocks for the cooler, to add to your camping essentials and use both if you are in a high-risk area.

Tie-down points.

This Yeti has tie-down points that allow the cooler to be securely attached in the back of an SUV to the floor of your boat or in your motor-home.

These are molded tie-down slots for easy mounting and will help keep your cooler and contents stable.

The Tie-Down slots have been perfectly molded into the body of the cooler and while tied down, still allow the user to access stored drinks or food in the cooler.

Capacity.

The Cooler has the ability to hold up to 18.9l. This, in turn, means that the Roadie 20 Cooler can hold up to 12 cans of beer with ice at a 2 to 1 ratio.

Moreover, the cooler’s overall design allows it to accommodate long-neck bottles, meaning that there is more than enough space for your beer and wine to stand upright.

Capable.

The lid shuts with a fridge-like gasket around the entire surface of the lid. The fridge like gasket ensures that the cooler stays shut with no air exchange between the cooler and the surrounding environment.

This super-strong gasket is built into the lead as part of the construction and not added afterward and creates a good vacuum seal.

T-Rex Lid Latches.

Apart from sporting a high-quality lid, the Roadie 20 also comes with durable latches, which fit perfectly with the latch keepers, to ensure that the Roadie Lid stays shut throughout the day.

The Benefits For You.

Features freezer quality gasket, which eliminates air exchange between the cooler and the environment.

This Freezer grade seal is manufactured into the lid and not glued on as an afterthought.

Being a part of the lid, therefore, makes it impossible for the gasket to fall out, it is thick and strong and will create a vacuum that will keep out warm air which is the enemy of ice.

The walls and lid of the cooler which contain pressure injected PermaFrost foam makes sure your ice stays ice for an extended period.

This cooler will also allow itself to be used as a casting platform for fishing for Tarpon, or as a strong and reliable seat.

Security is a major part of the design of the Yeti 20, so to have the option of securing the cooler with padlocks makes it a more attractive proposition.

Using padlocks is not only to keep your pals out of your beer but also to make it virtually impossible for any hungry bears who may be on the prowl for a free lunch.

Tie Down points are another security feature, it is important to note that if you want to leave the Roadie 20 Cooler on the back of their trucks should use the tie-down points to hold it stable while the vehicle is in motion.

Together with the Bear-foot non-slip feet this will prevent sliding and keep your Yeti in place.

Ice retention is a minimum of 3-4 days under normal conditions, obviously, these times would vary under extreme temperatures. Nothing worse than having to cut short a hunting trip for lack of ice.

However, keeping the cooler closed tight when not being used and placed in a cool or shady spot will assist with the ice retention capabilities.

Durable is definitely what these coolers are all about, If you are looking for a quality and long-lasting cooler, then you should purchase the Roadie 20 Cooler.

  1. A decent cooler is usually a necessity for a better camping experience. This one stands by its name. YETI is a big bad boy when it comes to keeping stuff cool.

This one looks pretty durable and cool as hell. More like an army footlocker than a cooler. I have no doubt that it’s a great alternative for outdoor camping.

    • Hi Mike,

These are great coolers, i recently had the chance to use the Yeti roadie 20 for the first time, and it performs really good. It looks great ( even better with a couple nice fresh fillets sitting inside ) and yes they really are as tough as nails. Take this one on your next trip, it wont let you down. On longer trips i use the bigger coolers for food and supplies, and the roadie would be ideal for the cold beers and snacks for the day use as your continually opening it. Thanks for the comment.

Please let me know how it goes for you.

      Thanks Shane
